Journeyman Scheme
The Journeyman Scheme, chaired by Roger Dimmock, is an example of where the traditions of the Livery Companies and the practice of Information Technology are combined to build on each other towards a worthwhile aim.
The ITC Journeyman Scheme was set up to assist potential leading IT practitioners to develop their career after their initial education. The usual period of the “journey” is 3 years, during which time the Journeyman is guided by a Journey Mentor from ITC and, where possible, one from their company too. At the end of the Journey, the Journeyman is expected to apply to join the Company as a Freeman.
Who is the scheme for?
The Journeyman Scheme is intended for young, qualified IT professionals, who have the potential to become leading IT practitioners. Typically they will be between the ages of 23 and 35, although this will depend on when their IT career started. Journeymen will be mature, qualified individuals who are capable of taking responsibility for their own careers.
Management of the Scheme
The Journeyman Scheme is supported by a Journey Mentor who is a member of the Company. The role of the mentor is to provide support and guidance to the Journeyman both on developing his or her professionalism and on the wider aspects of participating in the IT community and the Company. At the end of the Journey, the Mentor makes recommendations to the Company as to the Journeyman’s suitability for membership as a Freeman.
The number of Journeymen on the Scheme is rapidly increasing. New Mentors are always welcome; if you would like to help and guide young professionals in their career, with a view to them becoming Freemen of the Company, please contact kerri.mansfield@creationartisan.com, Secretary to the Journeyman Scheme.
The Pinkerton Award
Thanks to the generosity of Fujitsu, all current Journeymen are eligible to enter for the John Pinkerton Award each year. The award, of several thousand pounds, is to help fund the winning Journeyman through a particular education programme or project which will add to his or her development as a leading IT practitioner. The prize is awarded at the May Business Lunch, to the winning essay submitted by mid- March. Please contact kerri.mansfield@creationartisan.com for further details.
